Citroen C5 Aircross Review
When it comes to cars, the Citroën C5 Aircross might not be the dream vehicle you imagine adorning your vision board, but it could very well be the car you need for day-to-day family life. This 2020 model, specifically the 1.2L 130-horsepower version paired with the E88 gearbox, has earned a spot in my garage—and not just for review purposes. In fact, this is one of the rare times I'm reviewing a car I actually bought, and trust me, you’re getting the unvarnished truth here.
If you need a dependable workhorse that delivers comfort and space in spades, the C5 Aircross deserves a spot on your shortlist.
Interior & Cabin Design: Spacious but Quirky
Stepping inside the C5 Aircross, you’re greeted with an airy, spacious cabin. Despite lacking a sunroof, the interior doesn’t feel dark or cramped, thanks in part to the privacy glass on the rear windows. Up front, the center console is large and functional, featuring two cup holders and a decent-sized storage cubby—though you’ll need to do without wireless charging, as there's only one USB port.
The materials are a mixed bag. Some surfaces are soft-touch with a faux leather finish, while others feel a little cheap and scratchy. The glovebox is the most glaring compromise, reduced in size due to Citroën’s decision to leave the fuse box on the left-hand side for right-hand-drive markets.
On the plus side, the driver information display is a standout—bright, vibrant, and easy to read. The infotainment system is functional but not groundbreaking. While Apple CarPlay is a savior for modern convenience, having to access climate controls through the screen is frustrating. Thankfully, the stereo quality is top-notch, making it a pleasant space for long drives.
Rear Seats: A Rare Highlight
For families, the three independently adjustable rear seats are a godsend. Unlike many SUVs with narrow or compromised middle seats, this Citroën delivers proper space for a car seat alongside two adults—perfect for trips with kids or additional passengers. Rear seat amenities include basic seat pockets and a single USB port, which might feel insufficient in today’s tech-heavy world.
Boot Space & Practicality
The boot is generously sized, though the exact capacity wasn’t immediately on hand. It easily accommodates family luggage and the occasional run to the DIY store. Combined with the modular rear seats, the C5 Aircross is ready for most everyday challenges.
Driving Dynamics: Comfort Over Thrills
The C5 Aircross is built for comfort, not performance. With its light steering and Citroën’s unique suspension system (including partial air suspension), the car glides smoothly over bumps, delivering a plush ride. The 1.2L three-cylinder engine might seem underwhelming for an SUV of this size, but in practice, it’s surprisingly capable. Paired with the reliable Aisin-built torque-converter gearbox, the driving experience is simple and stress-free.
For city driving and family road trips, the light steering and cushioned ride are definite bonuses. It’s not a car for spirited driving, but it handles its intended role well.
Fuel Economy: Decent, Not Dazzling
In real-world conditions, fuel economy hovers around 33 MPG in urban settings and 42 MPG on longer journeys, slightly below the official WLTP figure of 39.2 combined. It’s not the most frugal SUV, but it’s far from a gas guzzler.
Reliability & Warranty: Peace of Mind
One key factor in choosing this car was its remaining warranty—one year of Citroën’s manufacturer coverage, followed by two years of main dealer warranty. This level of protection is reassuring, especially given French cars’ historical reputation for hit-or-miss reliability. Fortunately, the C5 Aircross appears to have avoided major issues so far.
Verdict: A Practical Solution for Families
The Citroën C5 Aircross isn’t a car that will set your heart racing, but it ticks the boxes where it matters most. It’s practical, comfortable, and versatile, making it an ideal choice for families or anyone looking for an easy-to-live-with SUV.
If you’re after excitement, look elsewhere. But if you need a dependable workhorse that delivers comfort and space in spades, the C5 Aircross deserves a spot on your shortlist.
